the redWall Firewall started out with the idea of having a bootable firewall CD with the possibility to store the configuration on a floppy disk. The first initial release was in 1999 and was based on redhat. One of the main goals was to develop a firewall with the following unique features:
configuration can be completely saved to a removable media "as is"
provide as much features/components/tools as possible
be primarly console based for the power users
no fancy webinterface which limits to just a certain amount of configuration possiblities
the whole filesystem has to be read-only (even if installing the cd to the harddrive)
/var should be writable (either by using a ramdisk or a harddrive mounted)
full control over /etc files. this way you can control almost every aspect of the system
be always up-to-date with the latest version of the used components
